Makeup Monday: REVIEW and TIPS - Better Than Sex Mascara

In the past week, I have been trying out some of the products I bought from Sephora and today, I'm going to talk about the Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara. This has been on my wish list ever since I've seen YouTubers talk about this. To claim that you are better than sex is a bold statement and that has got me intrigued. I wasn't able to get my hands on it sooner than I wanted to because first of all, it's expensive for a mascara, and second of all, we don't have a Sephora here in Whitehorse and I didn't really want to buy makeup THAT pricey online. So when I went inside Sephora when I was in Vancouver, there was no way I was going to pass on it so I finally purchased the mascara I've been wanting for a long time.

The mascara claims to be smudge-proof for all day wear, to lock curl in place and to give both volume and length to the lashes. It also has this unique hour-glass shape that I think is helpful to form your lashes nicely as you apply the product.

FIRST IMPRESSION:

I really liked the packaging. It's pink and it's one of the biggest reasons why I wanted it in the first place. When I hold the mascara tube in my hand, it feels really nice and it has a nice weight to it that screams "luxury"! It honestly makes me happy when I hold it. It has this matte metal feel that is very smooth to the touch and the name of the mascara is embossed nicely at the side.

Ignore that orange reflection from the sun! It's so pretty!!! <3

On my first actual application though, I was disappointed. I guess I expected too much for the price I paid and it just didn't wow me on that first try. It felt too wet for my liking and it made my lashes look normal, nothing special compared to my L'oréal mascaras. One more thing I didn't like about this mascara was that no matter how careful I applied it on my lashes, it ended up all over my lids! I think the hour-glass shape threw me off because it was unusual for me. Then at the end of my day, I checked my face and I had mascara smudges underneath my eyes! I was like, "ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! Even my L'oréal mascaras don't smudge on me!" I was starting to feel like I wasted my money on the mascara. I was thinking maybe because it's new, it is still a little too wet, and it makes the mascara slide to places? This is a normal problem to me with newly opened mascaras, so I don't know.

Applied this in a rush with just one coating. You can also notice a little flaking.

But I like the packaging so much that I didn't want to give up on it. Also, I didn't want to just stop using it because it's a $30 mascara after all. I can't just let that go to waste! So I gave it another try. I used it for a whole week hoping that the formulation would get better (so it dries a little), because I personally think that mascaras work better after a week from opening it. I started changing the way I applied it then I discovered that my usual technique in applying mascara doesn't go well with Better Than Sex. The hour-glass shape does the extra steps I did before for me; it curls and lifts my lashes at the same time. I also discovered that it's the kind of mascara that requires time so it can be able to give you good results. It's not the mascara to grab when you're in a hurry.

After changing the way I applied it, I was surprised with the results. It definitely gave my lashes volume and the bristles did a very good job at separating my lashes, making my lashes appear fuller. Because of these beautiful results, I can look past the fact that it smudges a little bit. I later on learned that the hour-glass shape also helps with the equal distribution of the product on the lashes and that as you apply, your entire lashes get coated in a single swipe. If you notice it, it is the perfect shape against our lashes. It helps give the lashes a fanned effect on both sides.

This too is only just ONE coating, but I took my time combing the brush onto my lashes. I think it took me 5 minutes of brushing without dipping the wand back into the tube to get this. You can already see a big difference compared to the first picture above. If I build it up even more, I'll get insanely voluminous and long lashes.

TIPS on how to apply this mascara to get nice results:

  • Start from the roots, wiggle it a little bit then comb it up and just keep repeating this step.
  • To make lashes curl even more, close your eyes as you comb the brush up. The pressure of your lashes against the brush helps the lashes curl better.
  • Brush your outer lashes inward first then after you've coated them nicely, brush them out.
  • If you want to separate lashes, roll the brush as you comb the lashes (I hope that makes sense)
  • To erase mascara poop on your lids, wait for the product to dry then wipe it off with a cotton swab.
  • Patience is key to beautiful lashes, ALWAYS!

FINAL VERDICT: ★★★★☆

I give it four stars because it's not perfect but it is still an amazing mascara. It is not better than sex, let me tell you that, haha, but as far as mascaras go, this one is worth trying. I just wish it didn't smudge at all and I wish it wasn't as expensive as it is! If it isn't $30, I'd probably use this all the time. I'm glad I gave this mascara a chance and I learned a proper way of using this because if I didn't, I'd probably be hating on it right now. HAHA.

Remember gals, mascara application requires patience, whether it be a drugstore one or a freaking expensive Better Than Sex one.

EDIT:

I discovered that the application will be a hundred times way better if you DO NOT curl your lashes beforehand. The formula of this mascara is supposed to curl your lashes for you and when I tried skipping my eyelash curler this morning and went straight ahead on applying mascara, I was impressed with the results!!! <3
